Economics of the madhouse, or, the adventures of our homeopathic health secretary

    1) South London Health Trust is in debt.
    2) Slap bang in the middle of its area is another, smaller health trust. Lewisham. Efficient and highly rated by local residents and local health professionals.
    3) Cost of Lewisham’s 6 month-old, state of the art, A&E department – £12 million
    5) ‘What shall we do about the SLHT debt of £65 million?’ says Department of Health.
    6) ‘I know’, says Health Secretary. ‘We will have a report and consultation to decide’.
    7) Cost of consultation – £5.1 million, and rising
    8) Consultant decides ‘Close Lewisham A&E, downgrade maternity department, sell hospital buildings’.
    9) Why? say local people, local doctors, ED doctors, surgeons, medical spcialists.
    10) ‘Aha’, says Consultant, ‘in two or three years’ time, Lewisham might have a … wait for it … £600,000 debt! If that’s not a clincher I don’t know what is. And it may not have a £2.4 million surplus….’
    11) ‘Ah, now it all makes sense’, says everyone.
    12) And the financiers all lived happily ever after.
    13) Mr Micawber (who knew a thing or two about debt) couldn’t work it out, though.

    The end
