LEWISHAM RAPPER QUESTION JOINS LEWISHAM NHS CHOIR & CAMPAIGNERS
The artist Question Musiq, who owes his life to the fast action of the Lewisham Hospital A&E in diagnosing his burst appendix, tells us that his music speaks to his audience about situations that life throws at us – using catchy lyrics, energetic style, melodic hooks and great collaborations, while at the same time breaking the stereotypical mould of a rapper.
He has already worked with various youth and homeless charities. Now he is determined to help keep Lewisham Hospital from demolition and closure.
This creative rap artist with a social conscience says ‘ it’s great to be involved in such an important campaign. I have got a really good feeling about this project as it really show the people power behind the campaign. I’m really looking forward to helping increase awareness as this matter is so close to my heart.’
The Lewisham Healthcare NHS Choir – originally assembled by Gareth Malone for his BBC Sing While You Work programme has continued to work and perform together with the support of the hospital they are now singing to save. Probably the most recognisable face of the choir is A&E Consultant and tenor, Dr Chidi Ejimofo. Also for this performance, soloist Natalie Beaumont accompanies her former choir colleagues.
Joined with other local singers and performers, this innovative collaboration performs the words and music put together by the rapper with local music producer Charles Bailey, well known for his campaigning albums, including one with Tony Benn. The accompanying video contains footage of campaign events – including the Millwall players sporting the campaign t-shirts in Saturday’s match warm up in the snow as well as scenes from the Save Lewisham Hospital march and rally on January 26th.
Dr Ejimofo, who also has a track of his own in the mix, said
‘Our A&E has just had a £12million re-vamp – we see blue light patients every day. Many of these would not make it to neighbouring hospitals. The idea that this facility is to be knocked down along with our acclaimed ICU, as well as the maternity and paediatric units is quite simply hideous. It will not save lives and it will not save money. Lewisham cannot withstand such a mindless assault. We ask Jeremy Hunt to do the decent thing and save our hospital. ’

Lewisham was born and raised,
Where I spent most of my days,
Indoor market Saturdays,
I love my town I love this place,
—–Mum would always say,
When she was pregnant with me,
And she, had difficulties,
Had to rush to A+E,
—All we want is access,
—We paid our taxes,
The whole community is standing firm,
We see your tactic,
—Pushing through your consultation,
But we know our rights,
Now we’re marching,
Cos we won’t give up without a fight,
Chorus
Stand up, stand up,
Stand up they ain’t closing us down
Stand up stand up,
Stand up they ain’t closing us down,
Sign up, Sign up,
Sign up they ain’t closing us down,
Sign up, Sign up,
Sign up they ain’t closing us down,
February 21st,
That’s when my Appendix burst,
I was just 13 years old,
Had to rush to hospital,
If you ever knew the pain,
Felt like it was yesterday,
(Ambulance swerving through lanes)
Then I heard the doctor say,
—We’ve got to operate,
—Now with no delay,
—20 min’s more and he said,
I couldn’t be saved,
—True story,
—Now the Cuts,
–Are making us pay,
People that we love,
Would be Laying rose on graves,
Chorus
Stand up, stand up,
Stand up they ain’t closing us down,
Stand up stand up,
Stand up they ain’t closing us down,
Sign up, Sign up,
Sign up they ain’t closing us down,
Sign up, Sign up,
Sign up they ain’t closing us down,
Chorus
Stand up, stand up,
Stand up they ain’t closing us down,
Stand up stand up,
Stand up they ain’t closing us down,
Sign up, Sign up,
Sign up they ain’t closing us down,
Sign up, Sign up,
Sign up they ain’t closing us down,
